P2P Cable vs DSL |
|
Which is better (safer) for File sharing Broad Band Cable or Phone Line DSL.
Is one harder to detect these activities than the other?

Depends entirely on the history of your ISP and their protection of their members.
For the casual users there's probably more chance of winning the lottery than getting in any legal problem. There's arguments like IP's aren't people, someone else was using your computer and you're not obligated to say who (your job isn't law enforcement).
Also, it seems like they NEVER go to court. The people that get in real trouble are the big time sites/ release groups especially when they're channeling a lot of money.

The only way to do anonymous bittorrent is to use i2p or something simular. toronion blocks p2p traffic. I tried it for a while but I found that 12p was really slow almost like dial up. Otherwise you will be tracked.
Also i2p is limmited selection of torrents and there are a whole bunch of Pedofiles using it.

-Which is another reason why I tell people not to worry about privacy online. If you're not a pedo; why hide?
Most people that use that privacy crap are hiding something that should be exposed. Those who aren't are raising red flags to themselves. We also don't help the movement by not exposing them to themselves.
On phone conversations we've said hi to the people and mention how they have a job because of us, how we're working for the best interests of the world, etc. It's humans that ultimately have to investigate things. Don't block 'em.. show em some love.
If you want safe file sharing; I highly suggest getting a usenet account, or do people not realise how Microsoft OS's get released constantly with no one going to jail for it? How RIAA/ MPAA only go after uploaders (uploading is discouraged to noobs on usenet).
I have that Newshosting affiliate banner below the forum for a good reason
There's no better way to share a file FAST!

You are as safe as your machine is. The line doesnt really matter. You can be on Dialup and be just as "safe" or "unsafe" online. It all depends on your surfing habits also.

i recently read an article about DSL subscribers. appearantly they passed a law in the US where the phone company owns the DSL subscribers surfing history. so if you want your online actions to be private, do not get DSL! you will find information about p2p at www.slyck.com currently its illegal for cable isps to snoop on what your doing online.

You may want to determine whether you have a static or dynamic IP before using P2P. If your IP changes regularly, you're probably safer. I would also suggest that you only keep your P2P client running long enough to finish the file you're trying to get, rather than sharing it indefinitely once it finishes. Move the file to another folder after it completes, so the client doesn't share it anymore.

-If you're gonna do that; don't use p2p.

IPs aren't as easy to hack regular joes now as they were a few years ago for several reasons. Aeon's advice is good though if you do plan on using P2P. I personally also use Pro versions of Windows not the HOME crap. So that way you can apply permissions which help a great deal.
Thats an interesting post about DSL and history. I personally dont care though, I got nothing to hide and all my P2P is safe.
