There is no courage in those who give away their Free-Will in exchange for blind service. Courage (Corage aka Coraticum aka Coronary) refers to Internal Strength, Volition, "Heart", Self Empowerment, and Self Reference. These values are only possible by virtue of Free-Will. The word Soldier refers to Solidus which is a Roman coin, and Solder (Solid) which is "to solidify". Soldiers carry such a name because they are paid by the military for their unquestioning, unwavering service; not courage. They are not acting upon their Free-Will, as they have already used it up by making the choice to submit to military duty.

There is an illusion which comes with the common image of the soldier. Images and tales of heroism revolving around soldiers have long been propagated throughout the course of Mankind's history. Human thought has been severely conditioned by this illusion. The soldiers who serve today (at least many of them) unknowingly identify with that stereotype. This is one of the most common reasons why many people carry a hidden incentive to join the military -- to experience the feeling of "heroism". Others do it for different reasons however, which of course, are still conditioned reactions within a larger system.

Only when "soldiers" stop identifying themselves with conditioned labels will they start coming into terms with their own Humanity. You can't have Courage (Self Empowerment) if you give yourself away to external systems of control. Duty is an action that conforms to any external system of control. Duty is a variant of Duete, Debitus, and Debere which all mean "to be in debted (dependent), to be due, and to owe something." When one has a duty, one can't be free. There is no Free-Will involved in soldier duty.
