i use xilisoft dvd creator.
nero never worked for me correctly and now i dont own the program so i had to find a free program that would burn the avi's i have.
the program works fine except for when i burn some movies the audio is off by a second (or a few).

i noticed that it doesnt really happen on newer films. at least i dont think it has... but almost always when i burn an avi of an older film it does this... i would think that since theyre all the the same file extension it would either do this on all or none... but when i burn files of movies that are from the 80's and earlier it happens almost every time! examples are movies like maniac cop, blood simple, zombie, etc....

but when i burn hannibal (avi) or something from the nineties, i generally have no problems....

can anyone help?

You're leaving out whether you're burning as data or as dvd, vcd, svcd, etc. Also, are you sure it's not a playback isssue as opposed to a burning issue? (copy the file back to the hdd and play it).

I found a DVD Recorder for $80 at Best Buy. Not only does it record DVDs, but it also has the nifty feature of playing DIVX/XVID avis directly from DVD.

Why bother taking an AVI and converting it to a DVD? It's just a waste of space and money.

BTW, the make/model that I got was: Liteon DD-A100GX

This is the fundamental error in your thinking. AVIs are more like ZIP files than any sort of standard format. Think of them as container files which can hold many different kinds of audio and video. In other words, some AVIs can have the video encoded with DivX, while some may use MP4, and others may use some other codec (MJPEG, Cinepac, RLE, etc., etc.).

There is a block of the AVI that tells the player which codec should be used to decode the AVIs contents. Your player will then check to see if you have that particular audio/video codec installed. There are MANY codecs that can be used inside of AVIs.

What are you playing them back on? If PC: what video card, what cpu?

Never heard of it. A common cause of sync issues is PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL conversion. I doubt it has to do with the age of the video. If a PC has a slow processor, sync issues will manifest in playback only.

PAL vs NTSC:
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/PALvsNTSC/PALvsNTSC.asp

(PAL is 25fps, NTSC is 29.97) PAL is used in Europe, NTSC in America and Japan. The standards fit around the different types of electricity.
