I caught them trying to install a genuine advantage software (when it should only install critical updates). This I presume would nag me IF I was a pirate.

So evil pirates: Be Careful.

If it fails

1): You will get a Nag screen warning you your copy maybe illlegal
2): You will not be able to download updates from MS directly, but you could
get them from http://autopatcher.com/ and other sites that put them together monthly
3): As it stands right now, ms will not shut off the OS ... they might be able to
eventually

not that im a pirate or anything, but here is what i did to get rid of this problem...

first i disabled the auto update feature, i can choose to update if i feel the need. but microsoft hit me with this trickery before i realized the deal. second you will need to open explorer and go to tools>folder options>click the view tab, now uncheck 'hide file extentions for known types'. you need to change that because you need to change the file extention. so i went ahead and made a new text file, and entered the information below:

rename C:\windows\system32\WgaTray.exe WgaTray1.exe
rename C:\windows\system32\wgalogon.dll wgalogon1.dll
shutdown -t 30 -c "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Has Been Removed!"

after you make a text file, enter that and hit save. then go ahead and rename it from 'new text file.txt' to 'new text file.dat'. then run the dat file, make sure you save your work, it doesnt always restart, but sometimes it restarts right away.

i know for a fact that this works on the first round of WGA patches, not sure if it works if microsoft introduced a new patch. give a shot.

lol...I dont mind paying for a real copy of Windows XP Professional provided they earn they 120-30 bucks. Ya know what I mean? Ive used XP for a while now, I think they've earned it. If you dont need to pirate your OS, dont, go buy it and enjoy a good copy of the program. Smile

When I was younger I pirated everything LOL...but I grew up and started purchasing the things that really do make my life easier.

I think that it is very common for people in the computer service profession to have laboratory networks at home. It is a valuable learning resource, and I recommend doing it. These lab networks can get pretty large (multiple servers and mutliple client PCs). In this case, the cost of the OS installations would be prohibitive. Bending the rules a bit becomes an easy fix. Take a "free" copy of XP, sysprep it, ghost the partition, and multicast it out to the PCs when reloading.
