The question is kinda vague. No OS mentioned, no specific requirements like interactivity, cost, or output format.

Not sure if it handles audio, but there is OpenOffice.org Presentation: http://www.openoffice.org/

The GIMP is well rounded, but probably not the simplest method: http://www.gimp.org/

If you're in Windows XP, there's Windows Movie Maker which is stupid easy.

There's Cinelerra: http://cinelerra.org/

I was thinkin of freeware... output .avi, I tried the windows movie maker, but the rendering time is 3 times the length of the mp3 track, a bit too long (but if there's nothing better or simpler I'll stick with it... pretty easy)

Maybe it has something to do with the image sizes too, since most of them were taken with my DSLR and the average image size is about 1.2-2.0Mb

Here's the first one I made... just a few pics I took earlier that evening, notice : the image quality is considerably bad but with bigger file size it can improve and the chain reaction begins etc... The file size is 33Mb.

I'd like to get some time for the Gimp, but it seems as if it takes quite some time to get around the basics...

Any thoughts on how I can get a clearer image, smaller final file size etc...

You can stretch the length of rendering time with Movie Maker (drag). All the suggestions are freeware, and aside from moviemaker are multi-platform.
