Mormon church obtained Vietnam draft deferrals for Romney, other missionaries

As the Vietnam War raged in the 1960s, Mitt Romney received a deferment from the draft as a Mormon "minister of religion" for the duration of his missionary work in France, which lasted two and a half years.

Before and after his missionary deferment, Romney also received nearly three years of deferments for his academic studies. When his deferments ended and he became eligible for military service in 1970, he drew a high number in the annual lottery that determined which young men were drafted. His high number ensured he was not drafted into the military.

The deferments for Mormon missionaries became increasingly controversial in the late 1960s, especially in Utah, leading the Mormon Church and the government to limit the number of church missionaries who could put off their military service. That agreement called for each church ward, or church district, to designate one male every six months to be exempted from potential duty for the duration of his missionary work.

The Book of Mormon ( II Nephi 5:21-23) talks about the cursing of the Lamenites(??) by God which turned their skin "black" and "loathsome" Its in their own holy book(written 1823)! It seems to me that this is directly related to the ideas of the highly respected Jewish "scholar" Maimonodes (1135-1204) who claimed that God "punished" and "cursed" Ham the son of Noah by turning his skin black. His reasons for this are disgusting...

Its all a sham and a lie created to promote and endorse the oppression of the black people. Maimonides effectively endorsed the Intercontinental slave trade (it was booming at the time) and the Mormons endorsed the American south.

For more than 170 years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has declared the Book of Mormon to be a scriptural and literal history. I'm surprised about how little I know regarding the Mormon religion after growing up in Idaho in close proximity to the hub of the religion. I remember as a teen thinking either one of two things. Either they were crazy for being so intent in their beliefs or they were crazy for being irrationally devious and rebellious and did things that were just a little bit over the edge. I think I might need to go watch the Mormon episode of South Park to go calm my nerves.
