this story is actually ommitted in some manuscripts from which the Bible was translated. It was kept [with notes regarding the ommission in some texts] because it was a story of Jesus' compassion. if you read the story and remember that the scribes and pharisees were trying to find some fault and reason to accuse Jesus, this story makes a whole lot more sense.
