All in One Instant Messenger - Pidgin (formerly GAIM)
I remember trying GAIM quite a while ago on a windows OS, and it seemed like crap compared to even the free version of Trillian. If I recall, yahoo IM was a poorly supported plug-in that was difficult to find or get working at the time. I heard that the Linux version of GAIM was better, and have been using it and was happy with it when I switched over (quite a while later). After a couple updates in Linux, GAIM was no longer to be found, but there was a new name it took on - Pidgin
In yahoo, msn, myspace, and probably others it will alert me to new emails and take me right to them conveniently enough like Trillian did.
It appears to have some bugs atm, but it's making me forget about Trillian: even the non-free version.
This is one of a growing number of apps that are helping to make Linux more attractive for the typical home user.

On windows, you could pay a fortune for programs inferior to these. Many of these can also be run in Windows (but may get better Linux support).
