Big Brother is Alive and Well
The US and the UK are "endemic
surveillance societies" - in the same
league as China and Russia -says an
annual report examining privacy
protection globally. Released last month
by advocacy groups Privacy International
of the UK and the Electronic Privacy
safeguards globally compared to 2006.
The US was in the bottom group for
the first time, following the signing into
law of amendments to the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Act, which
permits spying on international phone
calls and emails without a warrant.
Like last year, the UK earned bottom
place thanks to its network of
surveillance cameras - the world's
largest - plus plans to roll out national
identity cards rich with personal and
biometric information, and little
government accountability when
personal information is lost. The UK
government "has access to its people and
technology that China doesn't", says Gus
Hosein of Privacy International. "There is
a rapid expansion of technologies for
surveillance, identification and border
control, and a much slower adoption of
policies to safeguard privacy and
security," adds EPIC's Marc Rotenberg.
Despite this, John Palfrey of the Open
Net Initiative in Boston, Massachusetts,
says the position in China and Russia is
worse than in the US because they lack
constitutional privacy protection. The
only country judged to have "adequate
safeguards" is Greece, where an
independent data privacy authority can
fine or imprison government officials.

Peter, don't worry about. If you are a good little boy then the government won't bother you.
Only problem is that they define what good is and they are constantly changing the definition.
I have decided to form my own village in the Mountains, no tv's allowed, no internet, no money, just communal life with livestock and farming. I might allow few selected books. I will need to a monster to keep all my people from venturing off to the big city.
