Thank you for the article, "Additives in our pills make us sick". I have been working to educate and make people aware of this problem for several years now. Myself and my two sons -born after implants- became very sick from the silicon in our medications. The medications containing silicone, Ceclor, Mylicon and others, seemed to be the first medications to set off the worst of the reactions. The silica, silicon meds and vitamins we took to prevent and or treat common illnesses caused multiple unexplainable symptoms that continue on for several years. After learning that we were hypersensitive to silicon, I found that it was in all of their medications. Once we removed and or switched all of their meds to silicon free meds, their health improved dramatically in a matter of a couple of weeks. They were both very ill with numerous unexplainable medical problems, with repeat hospital visits and specialists for a period of about 4 years, Fibromyalgia, skins disorders, gastrointestinal problems, muscle and joint pains with swollen joints, repeat infections and other unexplainable symptoms. My eldest child -born of implants- tested positive for Lupus and I was told that youngest had JRA- arthritis, due to the swelling in his joints. My eldest son suffered with the worst type of allergic reaction you can have from the silicone in the Ceclor -a class 5 poisoning. After removing the silicon meds, they have been well for 11 years now! Some of my health problems have improved as well. The FDA has an interesting section about silicone hypersensitivity in the 2004 consumer handbook on breast implants. I have been trying to get them to insist on a silicon hypersensitivity analysis but they refuse. Any way I congratulate you on this article and I will refer to it many times in the future.
As far as the breast implant issue, I have "proof" that the FDA knows that the MRI's that they are using for the current safety studies do not work. After pushing the issue and challenging them they admitted that, "the MRI's don't even show chunks of migrated silicone gel". I would love to have a chance to go into more detail with you on the subject. I think you will find it very interesting, much like the hidden silicon hypersensitivity problems. Also in giving birth to my first child born -after implants- I learned that the silicone gel travels to the placenta. My first son- born of implants- placenta was completely glued together, "It's all in one piece, just like silly putty", according the delivery doctors shocked words, as he stood in amazement and played with the placenta. I've never posted a reply (in my life), and today I'm doing so with little time, however, I thought it was important to share the following:
Three weeks ago I was diagnosed with diffuse scleroderma. It is a nasty autoimmune disease few people know about. Essentially, the disease course leads to building up of collagen on the internal organs, to such a degree that these organs (often the lungs, heart, intestines etc...) begin to fail. The average number of years people live from the day they are diagnosed is 11. Presently, I have the bloodwork which points to the disease, but not as yet the more physical manifestations of it, such as skin thickening and claw like hands (etc...).
It is my strongly held belief at this point that my disease is related to silica; silica which I consumed via large quantities in our drinking water (from a well), pills, and actual foods, such as salt, and even coconut powder. I am highly sensitive to the commonly found earth based element, such that, if I walk into a house that has been drywalled and not yet vacuumed for dust, I will get sick. Tampons, which absorb fluid, also make me sick as they also contain this dessicant.
Silica dries me out, causes unexplained lumps on my body, makes my eyes red (and burns the skin of my lower lid), it worsens my IBS, it causes peripheral neuropathy sensations (in the form of burning), gives me headaches, makes me irritable and tired, leads to mouth ulcers and swollen gums, thickens my skin and has caused vascular problems, including Raynaud's (bluing of fingers). It also has led to acid reflux, muscle spasms, poor sleep quality, irritable bladder, joint stiffness, confused mental states, dizziness, fatigue reduced libido, depression and sensitivity to light. I wish time permitted me to go more into detail, but for the moment, I just wanted to say that silica has been proven to play the role of 'adjuvant' for various immunological activities. All to say, silica can be transformed into antibodies, or even antibodies which can play havoc on your immune system. It has been clearly linked with silicosis, and it now being examined for its involvement in the formation of LUPUS. (Please see an article that was accepted this march 2008 to the NAtional Institute of Health "Recent Advances and Opportunities in Research on Lupus:Environmental Influences and Mechanisms of Disease" to better understand the "adjuvant role").
In the meantime, monitor your consumption of silica, silicon dioxide etc to see if the 'health improvements' repeatedly stated are really true for you.....in my case, my body called in quits on the consumption of silica, and I have become hypersensitive to the substance, except if I have it supplied through foods, such as lettuce, potatoes, cucumbers etc.... (in molecular forms which don't yet seem to bother me).
