Sorry, I know you’re not supposed to speak ill of the dead, especially when they have spooky pumpkins for heads, but Tim Russert was a horrible journalist and his death doesn’t change that. I still hold him and other corporate media mouthpieces responsible for the deaths of over a million innocent Iraqis. Russert died at a relatively young age, unless you compare that age to those of the US soldiers who continue to die everyday.
Russert did not speak truth to power, but committed character assassination against those who did. This is the kind of “serious question” this “great journalist” was known for asking. Obama would later come to be asked unfair gotcha questions in his run (once Kucinich was out), but he sure seemed to enjoy Russert’s hackery when it was Dennis who was on the receiving end of the non-substantive bullshit.
As a Washington insider, Russert was not known to grill politicians as all the corporate news sources are now claiming he did. The news media’s revisionism of Russert’s career and the attention to unimportant issues in the wake of his death may actually be a fitting tribute since that’s what Russert was known for himself. Unlike real journalists, Russert gained financially and politically by NOT asking questions. He made a living diverting attention AWAY from the issues, and never exposed any truths. I’m sorry the man is dead, but he still sucked at his job. That’s all.
